How to style your bed via Simply Grove

Image: Decor8

One chore that has been engraved in my head from my mom is that I need to make my bed every morning. To her dismay, I never listened. Now that I am married and have my own place, styling my bed has become an important task. Even during those mornings when I have just minutes to get ready, I love pulling my covers over and leaving my bed looking effortlessly made.

To achieve this look isn’t exactly complex, but does require a few tips and tricks. There are different sways to style your bed but I must say that my favorite is the simple and uncomplicated thrown together look.

Below are a few key factors when choosing elements for the bed:

1. Sheets.
2. A large quilt.
3. Throw pillows.
4. Duvet and comforter.
5. Throw blanket

This can be your formula and main components. One suggestion is, your sheets and duvet cover do not always have to match perfectly . Try to mix and match what you have in your linen closet. For example if you have stripes and patterned sheets combine those together for a clean look with a white duvet.

When searching for a quilt I like to choose one that has a distinct pattern. I slide it under my duvet for extra warmth during the winter. I allow it to peak out from the corners and edges. When the temperature changes during the summer, slide your duvet off and have your quilt be the main cover.

Another easy, no brainer tip is to find your favorite throw pillows and disperse them across your bed. The trick for this is the more the merrier. I’m that person that sleeps with a million pillows at a time so I love the bed scattered with them. It’s amazing how big of a difference a few throw pillows can make. You can continue to collect pillows which then gives you a nice variety for when the seasons change.

The same concept goes for throw blankets. I have a hefty collection that has accumulated throughout the years and I love every single one of them. I am continually swapping them out around the house.

This Brooklyn desk, from Oeuf, is a beautifully designed with the highest quality of Baltic birch plywood. The functionality is what really got us. Decorate your bathroom for spring via simply grove

Image: Amber Interiors

Now that the new year is officially in full swing, we can be sure that spring will be right on winter’s heels. And with spring comes spring cleaning! I, for one, love the process of purging and organizing. It almost feels cathartic in a way. And what better place to start with than our bathrooms? I’m sure I’m not the only one with ten different eye shadows and wayward bobby pins lurking in the corners of my cabinets. Honestly, it happens to the best of us. But, fear not. Below I’ve outlined some tips and styling ideas to keep your bathroom looking shipshape the whole year through.

As the saying goes, “keep it simple”. Resist the urge to clutter your countertop with beauty products and other toiletries. A nice hand soap, a great smelling candle, a little plant life…that’s really all you need. Ok, and maybe a toothbrush if you have absolutely nowhere else to put it. Everything else can be neatly stashed away and out of sight until you’re ready to use it.

If you have a medicine cabinet, organize that thing! Use containers to store items upright, like glasses, toothpaste, and makeup brushes. It’s such a space saver. Also, this is the perfect time to go through all of your cosmetics. If you haven’t used it the last year, toss it! Chances are it’s already expired anyway.

Stools are such a wonderful little styling tool. They’re great for displaying items like hand towels, candles, plants, or even extra bars of soap if you have friends staying with you. Trust me, your guests will thank you.

If you’re tight on space, ladder shelving is an ingenious solution that also provides loads of visual interest. Use them next to bathtubs and showers to hang towels and store additional toiletries.

And, finally, if you’re lacking counter space and cabinet storage, consider installing some open shelving on the walls. Not only do they look beautiful, they also provide much needed room for stashing linens, storing supplies, and displaying items like that perfect little bowl for housing your jewelry. Done and done!

Dress your windows via simply grove

I have this corner in my living room with a large window and two side windows. It’s been easy to address the two side windows, but I’ve always found it tricky to cover the large window. I love drapes but I also love simplistic roller shades, or modern solar roller shades, that allow the window to not disappear. In this case, I wanted to keep this corner simple and full of natural light. Blindsgalore specializes in custom window covers, blinds and shades. When looking through their options, I quickly decided on their solar shade, which maintains your view while cutting back on solar heat. These are PERFECT for rooms that receive constant direct sunlight. You can choose the ideal openness level for your view. I chose 5% openness, which isn’t totally private at night. So if you are looking for 100% privacy, choose 0%-3% openness.

Maneuvering the shade up and down couldn’t be easier! I also love that when it is down, I don’t feel closed off to the outside. You still gorgeous natural light.

deMain

Kitchens have been our hot topic for 2016. Many of our clients have been approaching us with kitchen renovations and we must say, it’s definitely one of our favorite spaces to spruce up. When deVOL sent us these images, it quickly stopped us in our tracks. You’ll understand why once you see these stunning photos.

deVOL4

First off, lets give a standing ovation for this flawless cabinet and wall color. The hue is Flint. It’s actually found in the bathroom range. This is just proof that rules are meant to be broken. We are loving that the paint just spills over onto the walls. The matching honed marble worktops and backsplash is an unorthodox way of installing.

deVOL1

An innovation that has really stuck and is one of our favorites for kitchens are open wall cabinets. They allow your dishes and glassware to be neatly displayed and easily accessible as opposed to closed cabinets.

devol pendant

devol hiding window

We can’t deny our love for farmhouse sinks, especially when placed in front of a window that allows natural light to shine through. A feature that caught our eye is the beautiful pitch pine highway blind that can conveniently be pulled up when opting for privacy.

deVOL6

deVOL2

One task that can get frustrating is finding a way to be design mindful at the same time as being practical. There are many items that we posses that simply cannot be out in the open but are also essential for our every day use. That is why I absolutely LOVE this huge larder combination. You’d never guess that hidden behind are the clients fridge, freezer, pantry cupboard and microwave. Inside you will find a honed marble shelf and a spacious spice rack.

devol Cutting boards

I love the simplicity of the tray slot cabinet for cabinet and serving boards. Just a sliver of an insert can go a long way. Grabbing the boards will be an effortless task when hosting or prepping for dinner.

deVOL3

And before we close this chapter, we want want to admire this mobile kitchen island. It is placed on casters which makes it easy to move around and the rustic oak worktops ties everything together for the flawless finish of this kitchen.

Paint makeover with Pratt and Lambert via simply grove

A trend that I just CAN’T stop loving is a bold color on the wall. It’s dramatic, it’s stylish and it’s timeless. Everyone wants to make big changes in their home without breaking the bank. This dark wall phenomena is the solution! My assistant and SG contributor, Janna Smith, wanted to do something new in her dining room. So we partnered with Pratt and Lambert to create a striking dining room. We used their beautiful paint color, Deep Charcoal 25-18. It took this once white space and it created a fantastic back drop for furniture and lighting. Pratt and Lambert has been around for over 165 years, which shows with the level of quality in the paint. They have a fantastic variety of colors, in every color range imaginable.

BEFORE

BEFORE

Before, the walls were an off white, while the built in was a light grey. There wasn’t much contrast in the space. Now with the walls being dark, this space holds it’s own personality in the home. One thing that I love most about Deep Charcoal 25-18 is the deep intensity that it gives off. With accent walls being all the rage right now, it’s the best feeling to find a color that is an instant win in any space! I would love to see this color in a bathroom.

1. Wood

2. Gold or Brass

3. Plants

4. Marble

5. White Ceramic

6. Woven Materials

Hats have made their way back into our lives. Over the years, I’ve accumulated a considerable amount of hats and they’ve become essential to in my fashion AND in design. They’re the perfect filler, in your bedroom, hallway, entry way etc. For a while I struggled with finding the best way to display them. Showing them off in your space can sometimes be cheesy. So I decided to do some research and find beautiful ways to showcase my collection.

Image: Apartment Therapy

Don’t hesitate to incorporate hats as part of your design. AND having your hats out in the open makes it easy to grab one on your way out.

Image: Coco Lapine Design

Even your dining room can enjoy a little hat collection. If you’re looking for a cleaner look choose 2 or 3 of the same colored hats and hang them near one another.

This DIY, seen on A Pair & A Spare, is really fun and simple. And as the end result you get a beautiful display for your collection.

Styled by Kirsten Grove of Simply Grove

Do you have a corner or small room in your home that you want to turn in to an office? Do you want to keep it simple yet stylish? We have some simple ideas for you that will help create a functional and pretty work space. This small office space, you see above, was a clean slate. We added a perfect pattern on the walls and modern furniture pieces that are functional and cool.

Styled by Kirsten Grove of Simply Grove

1. First up, consider wallpaper on the main workspace wall. It will add instant drama. I am a huge Lisa Congdon fan, so when I heard that she designed a wallpaper line for Chasing Paper, I jumped at the chance to use it for this office makeover. I chose Little Village because of the juxtaposition of traditional and modern.

2. You can grab accessories from around your home to style your office space. All you need is a desk lamp, a clock, plants for a splash of green, some storage containers for those odds and ends, and a few decorative items to add some personality.

3. Choose an office chair that makes an instant statement. This gray cashmere wool executive side chair from Rove Concept is comfortable and still has a modern silhouette. Shop the chair here.

4. Magazines are a perfect accessory to add height and pattern to your desk. You can stack other small accessories on top of the magazines.

5. Ikea has some great trestles and drawer units, perfect for a custom table top. This is a great option if you are needing something a little longer than the average size.

Blue Cabinets via Simply Grove

I went out with a few friends that other night, and we got to talking about how we all used to decorate back in the day. They quickly pointed out one of my lowest moments as a decorator. It included palm trees and stencils. That’s right, folks. I stenciled palm trees all over my bathroom. Big greenish, brown palm trees to be exact. It was hip and cool (I think) back in 2002. I’m sure we’ve all made that one decorating decision that will age us for eternity. So who’s to say that some of the decorating choices now, in 2016, are not big mistakes?? I don’t know but I sort of don’t care. Mostly because nothing is new under the sun and we all are inspired by something that has already played it’s course. Trends will always come and go.

One of my biggest trend loves right now is colored cabinets. More specifically dark blue cabinets. It may not be forever cool but it’s cool now and I am smitten. This kitchen, photographed by Jonas Ingerstedt, was featured in Elle UK. I love the contrast of the cabinets with the floors and the countertops. And the blue isn’t intrusive, but calming and stylish. I think I could cook here all the time.
