I had the chance to review the new HP Spectre laptop, and I have to say that I am so impressed! It’s form and function is on point. But this post isn’t about how I received it for myself. It’s about giving it away to someone very special to me.
My mom, who was a single mom for some time during my childhood, was and is selfless, hardworking and consistent in her love for my brothers and I. She got her teaching degree when I was in JH, while still working to provide for us. She taught me that no matter my age or circumstance, if I worked hard enough, I could achieve anything.
When my mom decided to go back to school, she knew right away that she wanted to be a teacher. She has taught now for many years, and her students have always been very lucky to have her. The Spectre x360 is a perfect fit for her lifestyle. The long battery is an added bonus for when she is at school for long hours of the day, and the touch screen makes it so easy for her to navigate around the screen. It’s the little things that can add up and make life easier.
My mom has been using an older computer that is both chunky and slow. It wasn’t helping her lifestyle in anyway. The Spectre x360 will add value to her life in a meaningful way. It will also allow her to get work done in half of the time that it was taking her before.
The best thing about giving the Spectre x360 to my mom is that it’s a gift that she will use almost every day. For me, this holiday season is all about gift giving with a purpose. I want to bless my friends and family with items that they will use time after time. The Spectre X360 is one of those gifts that will not go unused.
Watching her open this gift was so fun. She isn’t the type to go out and buy herself a new computer. She would rather spend the money on her grandkids or kids. HP is all about reinventing giving. For me that involves doing something that makes a mark in someone else’s life. If that means that my mom can create a better life for herself by simply having a Spectre x360, than I am all about that!

In design we often hear about the “rule of three”, which essentially states that objects arranged in odd numbers are more appealing and effective than those grouped in even ones. And while I surely agree that we want to avoid the “Noah’s Ark Effect” of having everything placed in perfect two-by-two fashion, I do think there’s a time and place for good ol’ symmetry when it comes to styling our homes.
And trust me when I say there’s a variety of ways to do this — sconces, pendant lights, club chairs, artwork, mirrors….all of these objects can look fantastic when placed in pairs. The key is just not to go overboard with it.
This little dining nook has just the right mix. The round table, matching chairs, and symmetrical art print give the space balance and order, while the throw pillows on the banquette help to break up the rigidity.
I love a good dual vanity setup in a bathroom, especially when it gets a little creative. Opting out of the cabinet/countertop option was a good move here. It keeps the proportions just right and prevents the duals sinks and mirrors from appearing oddly cramped together.

Bedrooms are one of those spaces where you can definitely go a little overboard with symmetry (think Holiday Inn territory), so you have to tread lightly. Here, the matching artwork and sconces provide a nice “frame” for the bed, but the pairing ends there. Two different bedside tables are used and it’s critical to use an odd number of pillows in varying patterns.

Sometimes I dream of having a dining room with it’s own working fireplace. When you have a space with a unique focal point like this, symmetry can definitely work in your favor. The matching chairs and art print set in this scenario allows the room to feel balanced and grounded.

I wouldn’t mind having an office meeting here, would you? Club chairs were made to be seen in pairs and this is one of the best uses for them. Using a single large art print, rather than two, above the fireplace is a good option to prevent too much “twinning” from happening.

Sometimes I feel like a rug hoarder. I could possibly have a rug for every season in every room. It’s a hoarding problem. Sukhi Rugs are handmade rugs. Their main goal is to bring happiness into homes and they did that for us. This kilim patchwork rug is the perfect addition to my daughters room. It fits easily in a small space. The quality is on point and the texture is soft and enjoyable for my daughter to play on. The color has a few dimensions, so the rug can be used in various rooms around our home.
Cheers to another great rug!
How many small bathrooms in the world have no character? How many owners of small bathrooms have given up hope for creating a stylish space? Well, I have some secrets for you. Some tips that will help you create the perfect small bathroom. My first secret may be a shock. Painting your small bathroom a deep, dark, rich color will not only create a stylish bathroom but a dramatic space that allows for some great styling to make the most of your small space.
Recently we did a bathroom makeover that proves this point. We took an alley bathroom that belongs to SG contributor, Janna Smith, and we painted it a dramatic color. We chose Essex Deep Green (20-17) from Pratt & Lambert. Without making any permanent changes, this paint color changed this bathroom in minutes! It now looks clean, modern and up to date without spending hardly anything.
This bathroom was very average before. It felt boring and normal. Don’t get me wrong, I love white! But sometimes white can look too sterile.
The after is vibrant and cozy. The paint went on so smoothly and the color looks fantastic paired with brass, greenery, white and black. We used Pratt & Lambert’s Accolade® Premium paint & primer which allowed us to paint the whole bathroom in only one coat and is stain and scrub resistant.
Another tip for a small bathroom is to add brass for a sophisticated look. It creates a million dollar look. This simple round brass trimmed mirror from Target costs pennies and looks lovely against the Pratt & Lambert’s Essex Deep Green 20-17 paint color.
When using a dark color in your bathroom, use white linens for added airiness. I always use white towels and if need be, a white shower curtain.
Bathrooms can be easy to style, mostly because you can find such pretty bottles, ceramics and other objects for budget friendly prices. Also, use jewelry for added style in your bathroom.
Your bathroom can reflect your style without draining your bank account. Rely on paint for a big change! Pratt & Lambert carries some of the most beautiful colors that can change your home immediately.
