When we renovated our 1957 kitchen, we knew that we wanted to create a minimalist space that was moody yet bright, and practical yet stylish. I wrestled for weeks concerning what color we should paint the cabinets. I finally settled on something dark and moody, and I don’t regret it one bit! Which brings me to the purpose of this post. I’ve partnered with Kohler to talk to you about some of the top trends they’ve identified and I’m currently loving for 2018. These are more than just  trends. They are classic, beautiful and will stand the test of time.

What is the first, you ask? Keep reading!

1. NOIR

The first trend that I am obsessed with can be described as Noir. Dark, dreamy hues and high-contrast whites create a dynamic that brings out drama and complexity through the kitchen’s simple, ergonomic form. That is Noir! It’s all about the moody feel that comes from incorporating high contrast. It’s also about bringing exceptional functionality to the kitchen.  Kohler has created this by offering high design product made for everyday use. The Tournant kitchen faucet and Iron/Tones under-mount kitchen sink in black create this high contrast look!

If you ask me, kitchen’s are meant to bring joy to the homeowner. They shouldn’t bring stress or frustration. That’s why when you create a Noir inspired kitchen, you are pushing boundaries while keeping things practical. This look is easy to keep clean and always looks functional yet beautiful. For this look, choose dark cabinets and white walls.

2. WHITE

White will always be a good idea in kitchens and bathrooms. It’s fresh, clean and never looks out of date.  White kitchens and bathrooms repeatedly stand the test of time. Sticking with a neutral backdrop in the kitchen creates an easy setting for you to work in splashes of color when you are looking for a bold alternative to a clean white look. To realize the versatility of white, you need to realize the powerful range of the color white. Selecting a bright white with a flat front cabinets and white subway tile is the perfect look for a modern, minimalist space. However, if you are living in a more traditional home, you can choose a warmer white and pair it with a classic marble for a timeless look.

White kitchens and baths are anything but boring. The key for creating the perfect space is pairing white with the right materials. Now, white can go with just about anything, but it’s important to pick finishes and colors that give you the exact look you’re going for. Kohler’s Purist collection is my go to for a classic white bathroom. The single handle bathroom sink faucet in Vibrant Moderne Brushed Gold looks stunning in an all white bathroom.

3. SMOKY

Smoky is fun, creative and moody. Smoky can be described as a sultry mix of rich flavor and subtle spice.  It’s a moody palette with blazing golds and sun-kissed caramels. It can include a palette of brass, concrete, rich wood tones and light grey and/or white. The best way to describe it? Organically chic.

I designed this bathroom (above) around this mid-century vintage dresser that we turned into a vanity. You can see details that are minor in size but make major statements, like the brass trimmed window. I’m also obsessed with the walls. The concrete mixed with the brass is SO smoky! And to continue the moody palette, I chose this Kohler wall-mount bathroom faucet in matte black. It finished this bathroom quite nicely.

All three of these trends are more than just trends. They are classic. They are breathtaking. They are forever awesome.

  1. Loving the dark tones. That’s one of my picks for trends of the year as well. I just think that it is so new and now. Some fabulous spaces here! Love it!
