Mudrooms can become a tough cookie to tackle. They become the catch all for life, and can fall last on the to do list. A few tweaks can create a beautiful space that brings calmness, instead of craziness and order instead of a mess. Take this mud room/office (above) for example. It’s a smaller space with good storage and a nice flow. Because of the dark green walls and dark cotton drapes, it feels small and stuffy. Not much light is able to come through and the dark colored cabinets seem a bit ordinary. With the help of Pratt & Lambert Paints, we transformed this room into something clean, practical and pretty on the eyes.

It really is amazing what a little paint can do! The floors didn’t change and the lighting didn’t even change. The biggest differences are the paint and styling. Because this room has two nice windows, it needed a fresh coat of white paint to make it even sunnier. We used Pratt & Lambert’s finest interior paint, Accolade® Interior Premium Paint & Primer in Designer White (33-1), which isn’t too stark but not too warm. It’s perfect!

For the cabinets, we used Pratt & Lambert’s new Aquanamel™ Waterborne Alkyd Enamel in Essex Deep Green (20-17), which I cannot get enough of! The Aquanamel cures to a hard durable finish, making it perfect for surfaces like doors and cabinets that are going to get a lot of use. The rich hue of the Essex Deep Green created a nice contrast with the white. It also looks lovely paired with brass accents, which is why I switched the hardware to brass.

The countertops are a tan vinyl, which I wasn’t a fan of, at all! But after the cabinets were painted, they seemed to disappear. Which is a huge score, especially since there was no budget for new counters!

Another color that we introduced to this room was Accolade Interior Premium Paint & Primer in Pebble(33-29), which I used on the bench. I wanted to add some layered color in this space, but nothing too drastic. I love how this looks!

Also, it’s amazing what a little styling can do to a space. I pulled some simple planters, plants, ceramics, art and other small accessories. It’s simple yet makes a big statement.

  1. Lovely makeover! Do you mind sharing what their cabinets are made out of? I’m moving into a space with fairly ugly builders grade cabinets from the 80s/90s – definitely a veneer and not high quality – not sure if I could use that aquanamel paint on them?
