I have decorated my fair share of little girls’ bedrooms over the years. I’ve incorporated floral wallpaper, bright patterned bedding, and really girly art. It’s been all about frills and fluff. One space that I haven’t had much experience in, except for my own son’s bedroom, is boy bedrooms. These bedrooms are a completely different story, especially when you’re dealing with a teenage boy! Maybe even a bit scary? Nah, we got this. I have been up for the task and finally found a willing candidate. With the help of Behr Paint, my Simply Grove Shop business partner, Caycee and I decided to tackle her 15-year-old son’s bedroom. It was pretty much a blank space to begin with. He had a bed, side tables, pendant light, and a few accessories. See the before below.
Like I said, not much happening but a great space to begin with. It’s a smaller space, so space planning was quite easy. Also, when you’re dealing with a boy that would rather be outside with his friends, you don’t have to worry about giving him a lot of movable space.
When I partnered with Behr Paint, I knew that I wanted to go dark with a couple accent walls. I chose BEHR PREMIUM PLUS® Interior Eggshell Enamel Paint in Blackout, N510-7 from Home Depot, which gives off this really cool moody, yet modern look. It’s a great color to pair with light tones and/or other bright colors. I didn’t want to choose a color that boxed him into only being able to use certain colors in his room.
This is a shot of the room after only one coat had been applied. You can tell that after only one coat, the room completely changed! BEHR PREMIUM PLUS covers really nicely, leaving room for a second coat to seal the deal. All in all, this room took us two hours to paint. Not bad when you’re a busy bee!
After the painting was all said and done, we put the room together. This included room layout (which was easy), adding a wall shelf for art and hats, hanging art, and styling. A very simple makeover, but still, so stylish. Styling for a teenager is all about adding items that they can use daily, but that still look fun. This can include books and fun lighting.
Using a rolling cart as a side table is a great alternative to the classic nightstand. It’s movable and has a lot of room of storage.
I’ve wanted to add orange to a room, and I took this as the perfect opportunity! The burnt orange looks super cool against the dark walls. And I’m obsessed with mixing burnt orange with the green that comes from plants.
Copper against this wall color wins!
The print behind the bed was actually taken by my biz partner when she and the family were traveling in Europe last year. It was on her phone, so she sent it to a local print shop and had it printed on a poster. It’s a personal touch for this room!
All in all, this makeover was the perfect project to prove that paint can change everything.
