We are super excited to start this new series to help bring your home into adulthood! We’ve all been there, stuck with our thrift store finds that just don’t meet the mark and end up looking shabby instead of chic. I’m going to show you, room by room, how to and what to incorporate to mature your home. It’s time to graduate your home from college to graduate school, if you will. We’re going to focus on the basics, pieces that will make it look like you know exactly what your doing. From these key pieces, I’m confident you will truly begin to start decorating like and adult.

Let’s first tackle the living room. I think this is the perfect place to start your journey because it is often the focal point and gathering area for your family and friends. So lets make this one of the most comfortable spaces in your home.

Wall Color

The perfect place to start is with clean, white walls. It is always easier to build off of a blank canvas. White walls are timeless so this will be perfect for you living space, especially if you have natural light. And you can always add color down the road. Swoon!

Your sofa is a key piece. In fact, it should be the pillar that grounds the space. Make this one of your first big purchase. Go with something timeless that fits your household and feels fresh and modern. This sofa from West Elm can be easily incorporated into just about any space.

Accent Chairs

One or two accent chairs will give your room more interest. It’s a fun way of bringing functionality and art into your space. Don’t be afraid to get creative here. A bold color, shape, and/or texture will surly give your room a pop!

Invest in a statement floor lamp. This metallic floor lamp is the perfect ratio of fun to minimalist.

If you’d like to air on the more masculine side I think this black and gold lamp is perfect.

Coffee Tables

Out with the cheap, thrift store side table that you made into a coffee table, and in with the actual wood and well made coffee table! Wood is timeless and you can never go wrong with a mid-century style.

I love a simple, elegant coffee table. A glass top coffee table is a great idea especially if you have a small space. Being able to see through to the floor will give you the illusion of a bigger space. On a side a note, adding a couple of coffee table books to your table can be great way to add a little decoration.

Adding plants to your space may be one of the easiest ways to add a splash of adult. Plants exemplify that you are dedicated to taking care of something and they will bring life to your space. Put your plant in a beautiful pot and bing bang boom you have yourself a show worthy house plant. Also, if you’re anything like me and on the move at all times you’re going to want an easy plant to take care of. Both of these plants are just that. The top plant is a fiddle leaf fig and it looks good in just about every space it is in. The snake plant, pictured second has got to be one of the easiest plants to take care of. They can survive low light levels and drought so they can be neglected for weeks and still look radiant.

Come back next week for How to Decorate Like an Adult when we will be tackling the bedroom.

  1. What a lovely and inviting place the chair helps create in your room. The quote is perfect because your creations and posts cause people to settle into life’s simple — and profoundly beautiful — treasures.

  2. Hi! What do you do when you just have a million little knick knacks everywhere?! We have so much crap that I don’t know what to do with but we need. Scissors, papers, little notepads, momentos, etc. We live in a small 1 bedroom apartment with not a lot of storage. I feel so overwhelmed, I don’t know where to start but I’m sick of our apartment looking like 2 dudes live here instead of a couple. HELP!
