An architect’s home blends personal vision, upcycled elements and period details.
Precariously perched on a steep hill in San Francisco’s Bernal Heights  neighborhood a 1890’s Victorian home was in need of a complete overhaul. Owner Kurt Melander – an award winning architect himself – called on Lee & Co to realize his vision of an airy interior with breathtaking San Francisco views that would still honor the home’s historic charm.
The team reworked the floor plan to create a contemporary open concept in the main living spaces. The project and raised the door frames to a more complementary height of 8ft. After decades of wear, the original vertical grain douglas fir subfloors were patched and also beautifully restored using a flooring wax and stain process.

The entire flow of the internal space was designed around maximizing the breathtaking views – which included hunting high and low for wood sash windows including a large pivot window to showcase the view to Sutro Towers. The windows had to serve the functional indoor purpose of exposing the views, but remain true to the charm and detail of the Victorian exterior which Lee & Co painstakingly restored to the original condition.

Satisfying the style obsessed and tech savvy San Francisco customer can be challenging. Founder Arlen Lee looks to create more intelligent, personal relationships between homeowners and building professionals to achieve the truest expression of the homeowner’s vision.

“With this home all the elements were there – the house was previously cramped and outdated but in good victorian condition. Kurt had the artistic vision and we provided the craftsmanship that turned this home into a classic example of San Francisco’s elegant architecture.”

  1. Wow, beautiful! I just love the mix of vintage furniture and modern design. In Germany, you can find really beautiful pieces as well if you invest some time to look for them. It’s always worth it! 🙂

  2. Maybe I’m missing something. I don’t see the stunning factor. It’s a white interior with minimal furniture.
